Scientists say that HIV is able to affect not only T cells, as previously thought

The Fight against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is one of the primary tasks for physicians around the world, because at the moment the drugs that would be able to completely heal people from the threat of the virus, simply do not exist. But perhaps mankind still does not know everything about such a dangerous infectious agent, because recently it was discovered a very unpleasant property of HIV to affect cells that, as previously thought, are not affected with the disease.

As you know, HIV infects cells of the human immune system called T lymphocytes. Destruction of these cells leads to the development of AIDS — acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Over time, the progressive loss of immune system leads to the fact that any, even the most minor illness can cause severe complications and death. But as it turned out, not only T cells exposed to the virus.

The study, conducted at the University of North Carolina (University of North Carolina) a group of scientists led by Dr. jenna Honeycutt found out that HIV can infect macrophages. A series of experiments revealed that even in the absence of blood T-lymphocytes, the blood remains infectious, and the virus is «hiding» in macrophages. This means that even with adequate and timely antiretroviral therapy with modern drugs the patient with HIV to avoid re-surge of virus activity. In this case, if the results obtained by scientists, if confirmed, it would mean that almost all currently existing methods of HIV is extremely inefficient. Thus, further research should be devoted to the development of drugs that can affect 2 completely different types of cells in the human body.
