Mission accomplished: we created the technology of self-destruct devices straight out of spy Thriller

The spy Movies show us a lot of high-tech devices, some of which look extremely fanciful, others quite real to meet in our lives, and they are based on some existing technologies. And besides, it's not just possible to observe a situation where some gadgets on television have found a particular embodiment, thanks to scientists. Here and self-destruction of the electronic devices from the film «Mission impossible» may soon become a reality thanks to new technology specialists from Saudi Arabia.

Designed by researchers from the University of science and technology on behalf of king Abdullah (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, KAUST) and can destroy an electronic device within 10 seconds after activation. In addition, the activation may be conducted via wireless signal, and when triggered, various sensors, and indeed with almost any «stimulus».

At the heart of self-destruction lies a layer of polymeric material rapidly increases in volume 7-8 times when heated to temperatures above 80 degrees Celsius. Heat for this process is produced by a special heating element and energy is needed only 500-600 milliwatts. Himself the polymeric material consists of a number of miniature spheres, within which is enclosed a liquid hydrocarbon material. With increasing temperature the material of the microspheres is softened, and the entrapped substance is released and evaporates quickly, increasing in volume.

Experts from KAUST tested the system in many different ways. They used the GPS sensor, which is triggered when a device is removed further than 50 meters from the checkpoint. In another case, the system worked from the light-sensitive sensor. In the third activation was made with the smartphone via a special application. In the future, experts KAUST intends to test his new principle of self-destruction on printed circuit boards, hard drives, RAM, flash drives and other devices that may contain sensitive information.
