The New technology of self-driving cars developed at the University of Delaware, may lead to a world without traffic lights and speed limiters. The researchers also expect that Autonomous vehicles will use 19-22% less fuel. Imagine that the daily traffic is related and not random. Connected and automated vehicles can easily provide, communicating with each other, and not waiting for the input from the drivers. When the car ahead of your is accelerating, is accelerating and your; when slow, you stop, too.

Andreas Malikopoulos from the University of Delaware used control theory to develop algorithms that will allow to use this technology of the future. In two recently published works Malikopoulos describes innovation in connected and automated vehicle technology, first introduced in two University laboratories: test bench UDSSC and driving simulator.

Why self-driving cars traffic lights?

"We are developing solutions which could provide future energy efficient mobile systems," says Malikopoulos. "We hope our technology will help people faster and safer to reach the destination while saving fuel."

Imagine that when the speed limit drops from 100 to 80 kilometers, your car automatically slows down. Malikopoulos and staff of the University of Virginia has formulated a solution which provides optimum acceleration and deceleration in the area of speed reduction, avoiding a rear collision. Moreover, the simulation assumes that the connected vehicle will use 19-22% less fuel to reach your destination by 26-30% faster than vehicles driven by humans. The results of these studies were published IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems.
