Self-driving cars don't need traffic lights and speed bumps

Andreas Malikopoulos from the University of Delaware used control theory to develop algorithms that will allow to use this technology of the future. In two recently published works Malikopoulos describes innovation in connected and automated vehicle technology, first introduced in two University laboratories: test bench UDSSC and driving simulator.

"We are developing solutions which could provide future energy efficient mobile systems," says Malikopoulos. "We hope our technology will help people faster and safer to reach the destination while saving fuel."

Malikopoulos and staff of the University of Virginia has formulated a solution which provides optimum acceleration and deceleration in the area of speed reduction, avoiding a rear collision. Moreover, the simulation assumes that the connected vehicle will use 19-22% less fuel to reach your destination by 26-30% faster than vehicles driven by humans. The results of these studies were published IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems.
