Type II diabetes can be cured in four months: if you starve and work out

Type II Diabetes can be reversed in just four months by cutting calories, exercise, and maintain the glucose level under control, the study showed. The study included the creation of a personalized exercise regimen for each participant of the test and reduce their calories by 500-750 a day. Participants also met regularly with a nurse and dietitian, who monitored their progress and continued to take drugs and insulin to control blood sugar levels.

After only four months 40% of patients could stop taking their meds because their bodies have again started to produce enough insulin.

Scientists say that the program worked because it gave the insulin producing pancreas "rest and and reduced fat reserves in the body, which in turn improves the production and effectiveness of insulin."

Dr. Natalia McInnes from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, says: "This study could change the paradigm of diabetes from simple glucose monitoring to the approach, which we call remission, and then monitor patients for any signs of recurrence."

According to information received by Cardiff University, the number of people in the UK with type II diabetes has increased from 700 000 in 90 years to 2.8 million today.

Type II Diabetes occurs when the human body does not produce enough insulin — the hormone that allows the cells to absorb glucose in the blood or when the insulin produced does not work correctly. This can lead to kidney disease, blindness and increased risk of stroke and heart attack.

In the UK is currently funded by a large research task is to determine whether low-calorie diet can put type II diabetes into remission in the long term. Scientists see more and more signs that this is possible.

The Study was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
