Astronomers propose to use smartphones to register "fast radio bursts"

Fast radio bursts (Fast Radio Bursts — FRB) are isolated radio pulses with a duration of only a few milliseconds. There is still no unified theory of the origin of these radio signals, due to the fact that the number of registered cases at the moment is extremely small. For the first time, a quick burst was discovered by a group led by Professor Duncan Lorimer in February 2007, and since then, the number of reported bursts does not exceed a couple of dozen times. And recently, a team of astronomers have proposed to use to record these mysterious signals smartphones.

The collected data can be much richer than data received by using telescopes. And it can help scientists to study one of the most mysterious to date, phenomena of our Universe».

However, not all is so rosy: to register this rare phenomenon will require patience. The fact that such bursts occur once in a 30-1500 years. But there is good news: it was observed that some of them can be repeated many times over quite short periods of time, so maybe we won't have to wait until 3500 years to unravel the mystery of the fast radio bursts.
